NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

The study on “Identification of Rice Recommendation Domains; Implications for Biotechnology Initiatives” was completed in 1995. An extensive village level survey of 401 Wards, representing all major rice growing regions in the country, was conducted to identify and characterize different rice recommendation domains for Nepal. A ward is the lowest political unit and a VDC consists of 9 wards. The study identified altitude and rainfall to be the most important variables, for explaining the variability found in rice yields, cropping patterns and intensities, input use, and production. The findings showed cropping intensities and the level of Modern Variety (MV) adoption consistently declined as the altitude increased.

Similarly, the extent of yield loss due to both insects and diseases increased according to the increase in altitude under irrigated conditions; whereas under rainfed condition, the opposite trend was observed. On the other hand the extent of MV adoption, insects and disease losses hinder rice cultivation under rainfed condition, and the rice cropping intensity increased significantly with increase in the amount of rainfall. The proportion of rice area under rice wheat rotation declined and the rice fallow rotation increased significantly with increase in the amount of rainfall.
