NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

The project tested the socio-economic viability of metal bin production/distribution system involving the private entrepreneurs and non governmental organizations. The study analyzed economic and financial viability of metal bin production and financial conditions needed to attract private manufactures. The range of price fluctuation in production/distribution was evaluated. Aspects of social structure of relevance to the introduction of bins, quantities stored and purpose of storing were studied. Importantly, gender responsibilities for storing and decision making activities etc. were studied and implications drawn.

The study found that it was necessary to promote metal bins among farm households. There is a greater need to create awareness among farmers, NGOs, INGOs on the use of metal bins. An appropriate credit scheme for the purchase and fabrication of metal bins must be established. Likewise, private sectors must be encouraged in metal bins production. A comprehensive operational modality was developed for bin production/distribution.
