NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

A key component of the project is to conduct participatory action research to validate and pilot test potential coping and adaptation mechanisms subsequent to assessments of the impacts of climate and socioeconomic changes and identification of adaptation/coping mechanisms of the mountain poor. The findings of the assessments suggest the need for pilot testing of stress tolerant crop varieties in order to provide upland farmers wider and more secure options for their crops. Participatory action research on stress tolerant crop varieties aims to initiate the process of participatory selection and assessment of different stress tolerant crop varieties to identify crop varieties that are sufficiently resilient to stress. The pilot testing will help upland farmers in selecting stress tolerant varieties, thereby providing them an option to respond to vulnerabilities arising out of weather variability

DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES PROVIDED

  • Conduct Participatory Action Research (PRA) on stress tolerant crop varieties of non-paddy crops (cereals, legumes and vegetables, particularly cole crops) in selected sites in western and eastern Nepal
  • Select sites, one along the Surkhet-Jumla corrider (in close conjuction with WUPAP) and one along the 'eastern corrider' Ramechhap-Dolakha (in colse conjuction with LFLP)
  • Conduct participatory selection of varieties in the sites for PRA trials
  • Select participating farmers for training and conduction of PRA
  • Establish PARs on the different crops (cereals, legumes and vegetables) in both sites (at least two locations for each site, taking altitudinal variations into consideration)
  • Conduct farmer-farmer knowledge sharing events through farmer field schools and filed days
