NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The Project focused on poverty reduction and livelihood improvement which has remained a major challenge in Nepal’s developmental goal. Agricultural development and rural employment generation through market-led commercial production and marketing development of high-value agricultural produce has been recognized as one of the principal development strategies for achieving above goal. Vegetable seed is one such important high value commodity having vast production and marketing potentials in both domestic and export markets; due to favourable agro-climatic conditions. Realizing this fact, SDC extended its support to CEAPREAD for the implementation of the second phase of the project; which was implemented in 8 districts since year 2007 for the duration of four years. Farmers especially poor and disadvantaged started producing and selling quality vegetable seed after the implementation of the program. Seed sector policy framework was also improvised to allow increased vegetable source seed production either from NGO or the private sector. The increased household income begun to show immediate impacts in terms of enhanced house hold level food security, increased investment in household supply, medicine and education, increased investment in livestock purchase and house repair, and to some extent, investment in additional land purchase. Twenty-five cooperatives were established which were functional in the areas of seed production and marketing. As envisaged in the phase plan, government took initiatives to reform seed regulations aiming at establishing a sustainable seed system in Nepal. |
