NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The major focus of the study was to identify priority areas for future rice research in Nepal. The study assessed the agricultural research institutions and past trend of resource allocation to agricultural research, identified the major rice production constraints and the extent of yield losses caused by them at present, and estimated the ex ante rates of return to research. The study also found that Nepal’s rice research programs have not contributed to increase the productivity of rice in the country. Physical-environment, socio-economic, institutional, technical constraints have affected rice production in Nepal. The top five priority research problem areas found by the study were drought, blast, bacterial leafblight, brown leafspot and gundhibug. It was suggested that institutional and administrative factors must be improved to make Nepal’s rice research program effective. |
