The Village Popularly Known as “Onion Village”

Dasarathchandan Nagarpalika ward no: 2 has been in limelight these days, thanks to its local variety of onion. The village has been engaged in the production of onion for a long time now. However, its popularity reached new heights recently when the farmers of the village started commercial production of onion seeds and saplings.
Happiness of the farmers knew no boundaries when CEAPRED registered the local variety as “Baitadi Local” nationally. “It’s been a long time since we started the production of onion. However, recently with the support and guidance from CEAPRED through its project Nepal Seed and Fertliser (NSAFP), we started growing onion seeds and sapling commercially” said farmer Mohan Thalal, who have already earned more than a million NPR from sales of onion seeds and saplings.
CEAPRED through its project has established a proper system in the village. “The project has registered our variety. This has provided us immense confidence and happiness. This has also established a market for our onion variety” said Rajmati Thalal, a local farmer.
At the moment, more than 30 farmers are involved in commercial production of onion. This have not only helped them meet their end needs, but also, manage the financial requirement of the whole family. Through NSAFP, CEAPRED not only provides technical and knowledge support, but also provides equipment support such as hail protection net, inputs, fertilizers, etc.
“It we could get more advance scientific knowledge and technical assistance on onion production, we could improve the marketing of our local onion” says Mohan Thalal. He also added “we also need assistance in packaging and marketing procedures”. The farmers of Dasarathchand Nagarpalika expect continued support from the project.
